Sen. Dorothy Hukill, 72, who represented parts of Volusia and Brevard counties in the Legislature since 2004, died Tuesday after battling cervical cancer. She was the chair of the Senate Education Committee. A resident of Port Orange, FL, in November 2016, Hulkill disclosed that she had been diagnosed with cancer. She missed the 2017 Legislative Session while she was undergoing treatment, but returned to Tallahassee this past session. CUNA News featured Hukill here.
Jared M. Ross, senior vice president, association services & governmental affairs for the LSCU, said, “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sen. Dorothy Hukill. Over the years, I got to know Sen. Hukill through her tireless efforts to implement financial education in high schools across Florida. She became a friend of credit unions and a friend to me. I will personally miss her and the state of Florida will truly miss her leadership.”
In 2004 Hukill became the first Republican to represent Volusia County in the Legislature in decades when she won a House seat. She won her current Senate district, which includes DeLand, Deltona, Titusville, and Cocoa, in 2012.
A private, invitation-only family service will be held, while public services will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, her family asks for donations to the Halifax Health Hospice facility in Port Orange, FL, where “dedicated and caring staff took such wonderful care of her in these last days.”
