Important legislation supported by the Florida Credit Union Association passed the Senate Education Committee  on Feb. 5 and will honor the late Sen. Dorothy Hukill, a longtime advocate for financial literacy. SB114 requires “all students entering the ninth grade in the 2019-20 school year (to) complete one-half credit dedicated to personal financial literacy and money management.”

The bill’s sponsor, Travis Hutson (R-St. Augustine), named SB114 the Dorothy L. Hukill Financial Literacy Act.  Hukill, who represented parts of Volusia and Brevard counties in the Legislature since 2004, died in October 2018 after battling cervical cancer. She was the chair of the Senate Education Committee.

Hukill was honored by the FCUA for her commitment to literacy and to credit union causes in 2015 with an award presentation at the LSCU’s Florida Advocacy Conference.
