Patrick La Pine speakingA surprise guest was a treat at America’s Credit Union Conference at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida as roughly 650 attendees began their week of being inspired by ideas that move. LSCU President/CEO Patrick La Pine and CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle were unexpectedly joined on stage by Mickey Mouse at the event’s Monday’s opening general session.

The famous mouse garnered an energetic round of applause as the conference, which runs through Wednesday, June 20.

As Patrick addressed attendees, he spoke of Florida’s booming population and their choices to join credit unions.

“Every day, 1,000 people move to Florida,” La Pine says. “It’s been a great environment for credit unions.”

Today, assets of state-chartered credit unions exceed those of state-chartered banks, he mentioned. According to Patrick, “Before the recession, there were double the number of community banks than there are today. Credit unions have filled that void. Credit unions have become the hometown financial solution for Florida.”
