Calhoun Liberty CU leader shares perspective from CUNA Small Credit Union Committee

Thomas G. Flowers, member service and CEO of Calhoun Liberty Credit Union in Florida, shares his views from having worked with CUNA on behalf of small credit unions.

thomas flowersAs some of you may know, I have the pleasure of serving on the CUNA Small Credit Union Committee, and we continue to be your voice at the national level on how the industry and regulators can come together to better support small credit unions nationwide.

It’s easy to forget that we are not alone as small credit unions. Serving on the committee has reminded me that we have an entire COMMUNITY of small credit unions across the country to rely on for support, help, and guidance. CUNA tries to connect small credit unions via the Small Credit Union Community. I hope you have logged onto that web page and signed up for the daily emails to learn from your peers, ask questions, or ask for sample policies.

We’re also working on two big projects for you right now. The first is finalizing our Succession Planning guide, to help small credit unions develop a plan for finding the next leaders of their organizations. The next is our 20-year Review of the state of small credit unions. In that report, which we’ll release early next year, we will lay out the current major challenges facing small credit unions, and make recommendations to the CUNA Board and the industry at large about how small credit unions can be better supported.

We all know small CUs are vital to the future success of our industry. I’m proud to serve on the national committee that is guiding the efforts that will ensure we remain viable now and into the future.

Respectfully,
Thomas G Flowers
