Lizeth GeorgeGeorgia is headed into a special session of the General Assembly starting November 29, after a federal judge ruled the state’s congressional, state Senate, and state House districts were drawn in a racially discriminatory manner and violate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and blocked the state from using the maps in future elections. The General Assembly will be tasked with redrawing the maps as well as to ratify Governor Kemp’s extension of the fuel tax rollback of 31.2 cents per gallon of gasoline and 35 cents per gallon of diesel. The Governor can suspend the collection of taxes during an emergency as long as state lawmakers approve it the next time they meet. There is a deadline of December 8, 2023, to redraw the maps.
While credit union issues will not be considered during the special session, the League of Southeastern Credit Unions (LSCU) will be present under the Gold Dome to engage with lawmakers ahead of the upcoming 2024 Legislative Session which convenes Monday, January 8, 2024.
