Advocacy in Action: South Florida Edition

Last week, various credit unions across South Florida hosted Members of Congress in an effort to show support for their campaigns for re-election and also highlight pressing credit union issues.

We are grateful to the following credit unions who participated in meetings with Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25), Carlos Gimenez (FL-26), and Maria Salazar (FL-27): University Credit Union, Memorial Employees Federal Credit Union, Sun Credit Union, Baptist Health South Florida Federal Credit Union, Space Coast Credit Union, and Dade County Federal Credit Union.

These highly effective meetings communicated the importance of overdraft and why Congress should reject the Overdraft Protection Act, the failed attempt of the initial Durbin Amendment and why efforts to regulate credit card interchange will also fail, the Credit Union Board Modernization Act, financial literacy, and various other topics ranging from regulatory relief to community impact.

Florida’s Primary Election will be held on August 23, and we hope you will consider supporting credit union friendly candidates. The full list of LSCU-endorsed and PAC-supported candidates can be found here.

Credit union advocates will soon have another opportunity to promote the credit union difference to lawmakers at this year’s Hike the Hill, which will be held September 13 – 15 in Washington, D.C. You can learn more and register here.
