Democrat Doug Jones has won Alabama’s special Senate election, defeating Republican Roy Moore.
The Associated Press called the race for Jones, a former U.S. attorney, who had 49.9 percent of the vote to Moore’s 48.4 percent with all precincts reporting — a difference of more than 21,000 votes. Jones’ win, the first by a Democratic Senate candidate in Alabama since 1992, shrinks the Republicans’ Senate majority to 51 seats.
