Day 3 of the CUNA GAC was nothing shy of eventful, with speakers such as NCUA’s Rick Metsger and former Secretary of State and retired Army Gen. Colin L. Powell addressing the overflowing credit union crowds. Metzger provide an update to the GAC crowd; Powell shared his philosophy on leadership; CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle led a town hall discussion with leaders; and breakout sessions ranged from cyber-security to brand awareness to economic outlook and credit unions.

Keynote speaker Powell shared his story of being born in Harlem, attending public school, and getting a job as a young adult making $222 per month. He joined a credit union to open his first checking account as a young man and thanked his credit union for educating him regarding financial planning. He shared personal stories on how important leadership is and service to those who are in your organization.

At the end of this powerhouse day, the LSCU hosted a reception to honor its Alabama and Florida lawmakers of the year. Congressman Bradley Byrne (R-AL) and Congressman Dennis Ross (R-FL) were honored as the recipients for 2017 for their work to empower and protect the credit union industry. Nussle dropped in to commend the LSCU and its credit union partners on their advocacy efforts and progress. For a short update, watch this two-minute video on Day 3.
