On Tuesday evening, the League hosted a well-attended reception for our credit unions and lawmakers during which FCUA named its 2018 Lawmaker of the Year, Senator Travis Hutson.

Senator Hutson was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2012 and then ran in a special election for his Senate seat. Following a big win in the Republican primary, he cruised to victory in the general election. Sen. Hutson now serves as Chairman of the Appropriations subcommittee on Transportation, Tourism, and Economic Development. He has been a strong supporter of credit unions throughout his legislative career, having sponsored legislation on public deposits in 2017, 18, and 19. This year, Senator Hutson is also sponsoring legislation that would require high school students to take a ½ credit course in financial education for graduation.

Day two was both entertaining and informative starting off with a panel discussion on “Insights from the Campaign Trail” that was well received by the crowd. The panel consisted of Brad Herold, V.P. of Something Else Strategies, Kevin Cate, Owner of CATECOMM, and was facilitated by Matt Dixon, FL Bureau Chief, Politico.  The lively discussion sparked great questions and comments and provided great insight to our world of politics.

The conference ended with a very informative regulatory update on this year’s priorities from NCUA’s Acting Supervisory Examiner, Donald Thomas and Florida’s Office of Financial Regulation Area Financial Manager, Ben Brinkley. Priorities included BSA Compliance, CECL, Concentrations of Credit, and Information Systems and Assurance.

The LSCU is already making plans for next year’s advocacy conferences, so look for more details and dates soon!
