The League of Southeastern Credit Unions (LSCU) Board of Directors recently met to approve the 2022 lawmakers of the year. During the nomination and approval process, legislator’s contributions to, and support for, credit unions were discussed.
The Federal Advocacy Policy Committee voted to nominate Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Congresswoman Kathy Castor (FL-14), and Congressman David Scott (GA-13) as the 2022 Federal Lawmakers of the Year, which were later approved by the LSCU Board of Directors. All three lawmakers were formally honored last week in Washington, D.C.
“Immediately upon being sworn in, Coach Tuberville became a close ally and friend to the credit union community and the members they serve throughout Alabama,” stated Patrick La Pine, CEO of LSCU & Affiliates. “Coach has shown time and time again that he will not stand for overregulation and will continue to protect main street businesses and consumers. The exemplary public service from Coach Tuberville’s office is exactly why Alabama credit unions and the LSCU Board of Directors are proud to honor him as our 2022 Federal Lawmaker of the Year.”
“Congresswoman Kathy Castor shares the credit union mission of supporting underserved communities and getting capital into the hands of those who may otherwise be left without access to financial services, said La Pine. “In 2022, as credit unions across the country struggled to get answers from the Community Development Financial Institution Fund to continue serving low income and distressed communities, Congresswoman Castor showed the exact leadership needed to obtain adequate guidance and support.”
“A tremendous advocate for credit unions, Congressman David Scott championed the Expanding Financial Access for Underserved Communities Act in 2022, allowing federal credit unions to provide much needed capital to low income and distressed communities,” noted La Pine. “Due to Congressman Scott’s efforts, this historic bill passed the House, marking the first time since 2008 that the House has passed field of membership reform through the Chamber. His commitment to supporting underserved communities and aligning with the credit union mission of ‘people helping people’ is why we have awarded Congressman Scott as our 2022 Federal Lawmaker of the Year.”
We are grateful to Senator Tuberville, Congresswoman Castor, and Congressman Scott for their service on behalf of our members across our tri-state footprint.
