Primary runoff elections were held across Alabama yesterday.  Voters went to the polls to determine their party’s nominee for several offices including Lt. Governor, Attorney General, and the U.S. House Seat representing the 2nd congressional district .

Congresswoman Martha Roby defeated former congressman Bobby Bright winning 68 percent of the vote. This is Roby’s second victory over the former Congressman.  She originally won her seat by defeating the then-Democratic Congressman Bright in the 2010 elections.   LSCU supported Rep. Roby heavily in the primary and the runoff with financial support from the PAC as well as grassroots support from our credit unions.   Roby will move on to the general election where she is heavily favored against her democratic opponent.

In a hard fought race in the Republican Primary for Lt. Governor, State Representative Will Ainsworth received 51 percent of the vote to Public Service Commission President Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh’s 49 percent.  Rep. Ainsworth will face token democratic opposition in the  general election.

Attorney General Steve Marshall defeated former Attorney General Troy King to claim the Republican nomination for Attorney General.  Marshall was appointed to the AG position by then-Governor Robert Bentley to serve out Luther Strange’s term after he was appointed to the US Senate.  He will face Joseph Siegelman, the son of former Governor Don Siegelman, in the November general election.
