The League of Southeastern Credit Unions and Affiliates (LSCU) held its annual Alabama Advocacy Conference in Montgomery, Ala., March 3-4, and named Sen. Shay Shelnutt (R-Trussville) as the 2019 Alabama State Lawmaker of the Year to acknowledge his strong support of Alabama credit unions during his time in the Alabama Senate.
Among the numerous committees he serves, Shelnutt is the chairman of the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee. In 2019, Sen. Shelnutt was the sponsor for Senate Bill 33. This credit-union-supported legislation addressed several issues in the Alabama code, including giving state-charted credit unions the ability to expand their supervisory committees and allowing state-chartered credit unions to pay for the travel for a guest of a board member on official credit union activities without being considered compensation.
“Sen. Shelnutt has exhibited outstanding support for credit unions in Alabama,” said Jared Ross, president of the LSCU. “His leadership in passing changes to the credit union Act showed his commitment to building an operating environment where credit unions can grow and succeed. We are pleased to have this opportunity to recognize his awareness of the critical role credit unions play as community and service-oriented financial institutions.”
