Voters will go to the polls today to decide who will be their party’s nominee for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. local time.

Luther Strange was appointed to the seat by then Gov. Robert Bentley, who also scheduled a special election to fill the seat during the 2018 election cycle. After Bentley resigned in April, Gov. Kay Ivey reversed that decision and mandated a special election as soon as possible.

The LSCU Board of Directors voted to endorse Republican Luther Strange in their June 13 board meeting. Strange has long been a supporter of community-based financial institutions like credit unions and is in favor of rolling back the burdensome regulations imposed on credit unions under the Dodd-Frank Act. Additionally, during his last year as Alabama attorney general, his office supported legislation creating data security notification standards for Alabama, an objective of credit unions for years.

Currently, there are 16 candidates on the primary ballot, nine Republicans and seven Democrats. Runoffs, if needed, will be held on Sept. 26 with the general election taking place on Dec. 12.
