The 2018 Florida primary election is tomorrow, Tuesday Aug. 28, and it is important that voters elect pro-credit union candidates to help ensure lawmakers focus on improving the credit union operating environment and enhancing the delivery of services to their members. The League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates advocacy team traveled statewide to interview candidates and learn where they stand on the issues most important to our industry. This rigorous interview process was central to the LSCU & Affiliates support of credit union-friendly candidates. Our mission remains to create an environment that enables credit unions to grow and succeed, and we will continue to advocate for candidates who share our priorities.
The stakes are high this election season. On the general ballot we will see all 120 Florida House seats, 20 Florida Senate seats (all even numbered), all 27 U.S. House seats, one U.S. Senate seat, approximately 2,500 local races, and five to 10 expected Constitutional Amendments. Additionally, the entire Cabinet – Florida’s attorney general, chief financial officer, commissioner of agriculture and governor – is up for election. The general election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Politics is changing. From the way candidate’s campaign to the way people vote, politics is changing. Florida has embraced these changes, and over the years has developed a very robust elections process that accommodates voting-by-mail, early voting and day-of voting. It’s because of this great access that Floridians have to early voting that has actually made it more expensive for candidates to campaign, and it makes polling and predicting races much more complex.
According to the Florida Division of Elections and the Florida Chamber of Commerce Political Institute, here’s what’s impacting Florida’s political landscape:
