Guardians Credit Union was recently awarded national designation as a Juntos Avanzamos (“Together We Advance”) credit union, which recognizes credit unions committed to serving and empowering Hispanic and immigrant consumers and helping them navigate the U.S. financial system. This notable designation was celebrated with a proclamation presentation and flag-raising ceremony on May 3.
Juntos Avanzamos credit unions are recognized nationally for providing safe, affordable and relevant financial services to Hispanic and immigrant consumers. An extensive application process carefully evaluated by Juntos Avanzamos program officials determines the validity of each credit union’s business practices related to serving the Hispanic community. Juntos Avanzamos credit unions employ bilingual, culturally-competent staff and leadership, accept alternative forms of ID and treats all of their members with respect, regardless of immigration status.
Pablo deFelippe of Inclusiv (formerly the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions) presented the proclamation to Guardians’ President/CEO John Deese and Chairman Tom Shea. Maria Antuna of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Palm Beach County, Jordan Borroughs of the LSCU, and CEO John Deese spoke about how this designation will benefit the West Palm Beach community.
The celebration featured speakers from the community and key Guardians Credit Union staff members dedicated to making this designation a reality. Guests enjoyed performances by Okeeheelee Middle School’s La Tuna, Mariachi Pancho Villa, and Bolivian dancers, as well as delicious Cuban food.
Naheloa announces Financial Fitness team to attend SCUCE in Orlando
Naheola Credit Union surprised Demopolis High students Jordan Dobson, Patrick Hall, and Haley Hoggle with an announcement that they qualified for the LIVE Financial Fitness League Championship sponsored by the League of Southeastern Credit Unions in Orlando, FL, this June at the J.W. Marriott in conjunction with the annual SCUCE event. They are one of two teams from the state of Alabama that will compete.
Preparing for the adventure are: Kelly Gandy (DHS teacher), Mark Johnson (CEO at Naheola Credit Union), Jordan Hobson, Patrick Hall, Haley Hoggle, Ashley Coplin (marketing specialist at Naheola Credit Union), Connie Davis (career tech coordinator), and Blaine Hathcock (principal at DHS).
Tallahassee YPs plan to flock together for unique fundraiser
The Tallahassee Chapter of Credit Unions is planning an exciting charitable event, a Flocking Good Trivia Night on July 18 at 6:30 p.m. This will be the group’s first annual fundraiser benefiting Big Bend Habitat for Humanity and CUPAC. Response to the event has been overwhelming, and this gives other YP groups great fundraising ideas!
Details for the benefit include:
- Full team reservations [six people] will receive a free appetizer or pitcher of beer!
- The winning trivia table will receive a $300 cash prize.
- Space is VERY limited, so players and credit unions are encouraged to register ASAP. (If you are a credit union and would prefer to be invoiced, please e-mail LSCUYPtlh@gmail.com to reserve your space)
- Bring creative team names and casual (but appropriate) Florida attire.

Community Partnership Workshop brings together area credit unions
Juli Lewis, SECUF director, recently facilitated a Community Partnership Workshop in Jacksonville, FL. Attendance was outstanding with participants from Envision Credit Union, FSU Credit Union, Vystar Credit Union, Alive Credit Union, Community First Credit Union, First Florida Credit Union, United Way, Florida Prosperity Partnership, and CU Strategic Planning.
