Empowering Young Professionals in the Credit Union Industry: A Recap of Young Professionals Think Tank

This weekend, the League of Southeastern Credit Unions (LSCU) hosted the annual Young Professionals (YPs) Think Tank, in Birmingham, Alabama, designed for YPs. This year’s Think Tank saw 75 participants from Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, where YPs could come together to network, learn, and elevate their understanding of credit unions. Sponsored by Corporate America Credit Union, this event elevated YPs seeking to expand their horizons and take their careers to new heights.

The conference began with an inspiring keynote address by Steve Swofford, CEO of Alabama Credit Union, reflecting on his lifelong journey within the credit union sphere. Following this, Grant Abbott, Vice President of Lending & Administration at Florida State University Credit Union, shared insights on personal branding and the invaluable role of connections made through volunteering in shaping one’s credit union career. The day continued with an executive panel from Alabama Credit Union, offering invaluable advice and insights into the credit union journey.

The second day kicked off with Jessie Betts-Bono of Bono Communications & Marketing, LLC, discussing the art of effective communication and its impact on professional perception. Tobi Weingart, Chief Program Officer at the National Credit Union Foundation, delved into the core principles of the credit union movement, urging YPs to explore its underlying philosophy. Michelle Roth, Senior Director of Governmental Affairs at LSCU, shed light on advocacy within the credit union sector, emphasizing avenues for YPs to engage in legislative processes and recent successes in advocacy efforts across the region. The day progressed with sessions on career advancement by Ryan Hesser of VyStar Credit Union and a reality fair led by Bobbi Grady of the Southeastern Credit Union Foundation, utilizing innovative tools to impart financial literacy to young audiences. The event concluded with a captivating session by Sedric Brinson of America’s Credit Unions, guiding YPs to unravel their purpose and embrace positivity amidst adversity.

Throughout Think Tank, YPs left feeling energized and motivated, armed with newfound knowledge, connections, and a deeper understanding of their impact within the credit union movement. Think Tank exemplified the power of collaboration, mentorship, and continuous learning by propelling the next generation of credit union leaders forward.
