Join the Credit Unions Care Challenge to support ‘buy local’ push

As coronavirus numbers spike, local businesses continue to struggle to keep their doors open. Every purchase or donation counts for restaurants, shops and small operations. The Southeastern Credit Union Foundation’s (SECUF) #CreditUnionsCareChallenge has reached an impact of nearly $900,000 from the work of the LSCU and more than 60 credit unions.

Please join credit unions in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia that are signing on and making a difference supporting local businesses and charities by spending their dollars within the communities they care about.

If your credit union hasn’t responded to the “challenge” set forth by the SECUF, it’s a great time to do your part by joining the efforts to lift up local shops during the crisis. To support their local economy, credit unions commit at least $25 per employee who will then use the money at a locally owned business via online options, while adhering to social distancing protocols.

To double the impact, SECUF is committed to matching the contribution by member credit unions up to $25 per employee. These matched funds will be donated to local community organizations, selected by the participating credit union.

Thank you to all of our 64 participating credit unions! The SECUF began this initiative to answer the challenge put forth by Tallahassee-based First Commerce Credit Union in its ambitious #LocalStrong campaign. The credit union utilized this campaign to distribute more than $4,000 among more than 150 team members to spend with local businesses.

Thank you to Premier Donor Corporate America CU for contributing $100,000! Our Supporter-Level Sponsor is CUNA Mutual Group. Supporting Friends are Catalyst Corporate FCU, Corporate One FCU, Sorenson Van Leuven, PLLC, Symitar, Evans, Simpson & Associates, Inc.

“We are so proud of the support we have received from sponsors and from credit unions in our three states,” said SECUF Director Juli Lewis. “We know how difficult this pandemic has been on small businesses, and every bit of support they receive makes a difference to the bottom line for their companies. We want them to see how credit unions truly believe in ‘people helping people,’ and I feel strongly that we can have an impact on helping them keep their doors open as we move through this crisis.”
