More than 300 volunteer leaders from across the south gathered recently for the Southeastern Regional Credit Union Schools (SRCUS) Southeast Regional Directors’ Conference in Memphis, Tennessee, hosted by the Tennessee Credit Union League. The conference location rotates among the ten Southeastern states, giving each state an opportunity to host their fellow credit union volunteers and showcase the best of what their state has to offer.
“This event is a true showcase of the credit union principle of cooperation among cooperatives,” said Fred Robinson, President and CEO of the Tennessee Credit Union League. “Board of Directors and supervisory committee members from more than 30 credit unions came together for four days of professional development and fellowship.”
The event kicked off with a welcome reception, an exclusive history presentation of the Peabody Hotel by the Duckmaster and a private rooftop duck march by the famous Peabody Hotel’s ducks.
Ted Townsend, President of the Memphis Chamber, welcomed attendees to Memphis and shared insights about Bluff City. The conference opened with a morning keynote by motivational speaker Jody Urquhart and provided a lively, interactive look at how to inspire a spirited and resilient workforce that stays focused and productive.
Breakout sessions featured tracks specifically for Board of Directors and supervisory committee members. In addition, conference guests were able to participate in a special session on jewelry- making hosted by a credit union volunteer leader.
Guests toured the home of rock- and -roll legend, Elvis Presley, and, later that evening at the closing reception, they enjoyed music and entertainment by Elvis impersonator, Brian Lee Howell.
During the last day of the conference, Dan Meers, mascot for the Kansas City Chiefs, shared some valuable lessons he’s learned during his long career as a professional mascot. Whether at home, work, or in the community, Dan challenged the audience to live each day to the fullest by wisely investing their lives and not just spending them.
