In Florida and Alabama, weather and life events can be life-changing with little warning and the credit union movement is always standing ready to assist its members when disaster strikes through the National Credit Union Foundation (the Foundation) and the Southeast Credit Union Foundation (SECUF). In 2017, the Foundation assisted credit unions in response to four major disasters and the SECUF has responded to eight events since that time period which include Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Maria (PR), Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Florence (Carolinas); California wildfires; Parkland school shooting (FL); Hurricane Michael; and tornadoes in Alabama.
Recently, at the Southeast Credit Union Conference and Expo (SCUCE) in Orlando, the League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates (LSCU) presented the Brother’s Keeper Award that highlights the spirit of People Helping People during recent recovery efforts from Hurricane Michael.
The Brother’s Keeper Award was resurrected to honor those who responded so quickly and generously to the overwhelming needs created by the Category 5 storm. Hear stories on how credit unions and the SECUF responded to the needs of our credit union family during that time.
