The Alabama Credit Union Association, an affiliate of the LSCU, announces its endorsement of Republican Luther Strange for United States Senate. The LSCU Board of Directors formally voted to endorse Strange in their June 13 board meeting. Strange holds the Senate seat formerly occupied by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and will face an election in August.

“I’m so thankful for the endorsement and support of the Alabama Credit Union Association,” Strange said. “They are valuable members of our state and their contributions to our communities and family businesses are numerous.”

Strange has long been a supporter of community based financial institutions such as credit unions and is in favor of rolling back the burdensome regulations imposed on credit unions under the Dodd-Frank Act. Additionally, during his last year as Alabama attorney general, his office supported legislation creating data security notification standards for Alabama, an objective of credit unions for years.

“Sen. Strange recognizes the integral role credit unions play within their communities,” said LSCU & Affiliates President/CEO Patrick La Pine. “As attorney general, his office backed legislation favorable to credit unions. It is important for our credit unions to support individuals who are aware of the need to constrain harmful regulations, and we look forward to working with Sen. Strange as he continues to do what is best for Alabamians and credit unions.”

Strange currently serves on four committees in the U.S. Senate, which have a direct impact on the people and industries of Alabama — the Senate Committees on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry; Armed Services; Budget; and Energy and Natural Resources. Strange, appointed by former Gov. Robert Bentley, will be part of Gov. Kay Ivey’s mandated special election primary Aug. 15 and runoff, if necessary, on Sept. 26.
