SECUF’s Financial Fitness Tournament heats up in Florida Keys

The Southeastern Credit Union Foundation recently helped to narrow down the Financial Fitness Tournament in the Florida Keys.

The Foundation’s Financial Fitness Tournament pits high school students from credit union chapters in each of the three states against one another to test their financial know-how. The tournament begins in March by hosting local competitions for chapters with more than one team. The winners of those competitions move on to online competitions with champions from different chapters to determine the top five teams.

In June, those top teams will compete live at JW Marriott Grande Lakes in Orlando, Fla.

This past week, 15 teams from the Florida Keys participated in three different competitions to determine a winner from that area. In the upper Keys, five teams from Coral Shores High School competed. Another six teams competed in the Middle Keys and four competed in the Lower Keys.

The following teams were crowned champions from each area:

  • Team Key Weekly News from Coral Shores High School in the Upper Keys
  • The Godilocks from Marathon High School in the Middle Keys
  • The Bigger Brains from Keys Collegiate Academy in the Lower Keys

These three teams will now face off against each other for the title of Keyswide Champion, which will go on to compete in the statewide competition.

“We’re so proud of all the winners so far — they’ve demonstrated some serious financial literacy skills,” said Juli Lewis, director of the Foundation. “We bring this competition to students as a fun way of flexing personal finance knowledge. It’s gratifying to see students taking it so seriously and having a good time along the way.”

So far, teachers in the Keys have been impressed with the way students have reacted to the tournament.

“The Financial Fitness Tournament has turned my classroom into a competitive learning environment,” said James Murphy, a teacher from Marathon High School. “The students look forward to this time of year and I personally want to thank you for allowing the students this opportunity.”
