International Partnerships Strengthen the Credit Union Movement

International partnerships have long been a cornerstone of the global credit union movement. These collaborations enable financial cooperatives to share knowledge, resources, and strategies, addressing common challenges and developing innovative solutions across borders.

“Encouraging partnerships with organizations beyond our borders inspires us to think globally and gain valuable insight into the cooperative movement including challenges that haven’t yet come our way but may be on the horizon,” expressed Debbie Smith, CEO and President of Georgia United Credit Union. “Georgia United has benefitted greatly from exchanging ideas with peers in the global community about board governance, development including succession planning, innovation, collaboration, growth, member experience, and operations.”

These partnerships not only benefit individual financial institutions but also strengthen the credit union sector worldwide, allowing for greater relevance in local communities while supporting global initiatives. The World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) plays a crucial role in facilitating these connections, helping credit unions navigate the complexities of an ever-evolving financial landscape. Another collaboration that exemplifies this spirit is the ongoing partnership between the League of Southeastern Credit Unions (LSCU) and the Association of British Credit Unions Limited (ABCUL). The combined work underscores the powerful potential of cross-border alliances to drive innovation and strengthen credit unions’ impact.

“International partnerships and exchanges between credit unions have been the lifeblood of our movement and go to the heart of our purpose at WOCCU. The willingness of financial cooperatives to share knowledge, resources, and strategies with their global peers is inspiring local solutions to our shared challenges,” stated Thomas Belekevich, Director of Member Services at WOCCU. “This force for collaboration is empowering credit unions to strengthen communities, expand their relevance and position the sector for a larger role in the transition to a more sustainable future. The International Partnership between LSCU and ABCUL exemplifies the tremendous potential we have together to build a better world through credit unions.”

On International Credit Union Day (ICU Day), celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October, credit unions come together to recognize the global impact of their work. Since its inception in 1948, ICU Day has proven to be an opportunity to honor the history of the movement, showcasing its achievements, and acknowledging the tireless efforts of those working to improve members’ financial well-being.
