Strengthening Credit Union Bonds: LSCU and ABCUL’s Collaborative Efforts

The League of Southeastern Credit Union (LSCU) is excited to continue the significant partnership with the Association of British Credit Unions Limited (ABCUL), a partnership aiming to boost the capabilities and resources of credit unions across Great Britain and the United States. This collaboration is a testament to the shared vision of enhancing the credit union movement on both sides of the Atlantic.

Empowering Through Consultation, Education, and Mentoring

One of the cornerstone elements of this partnership is the provision of tailored support to British credit unions. The LSCU extends its expertise through comprehensive consultation, education, and mentoring programs. These initiatives are designed to address the specific challenges and opportunities identified by the credit unions themselves, ensuring that the support provided is both relevant and impactful.

The interaction between British and LSCU credit unions facilitates an exchange of ideas on critical topics such as membership growth, strategies for attracting younger members, the introduction of new products and services, enhancing member engagement with existing offerings, and leveraging technology to improve operations and member experience.

Celebrating Success and Fostering Future Leaders

A shining example of this collaborative spirit was evident in the recent success at the CU Futures program. Representatives from Serve and Protect Credit Union, along with their project partners from Central Credit Union, showcased the power of this partnership by winning the team project award. This achievement underscores the dedication and hard work of participants over a rigorous 10-month journey.

Cultivating the Next Generation of Credit Union Professionals

The LSCU’s commitment to the future of the credit union movement is further exemplified by the inaugural Young Professional (YP) Leads Group. This initiative brings together young professionals, aged 40 and under, from Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, fostering industry awareness, professional development, and a collaborative spirit. By investing in these emerging leaders, the LSCU ensures the sustained growth and evolution of the credit union sector.

This year, YPs from ABCUL were invited to attend the Southeast Credit Union Conference & Expo (SCUCE), the largest gathering in the Southeast for credit unions and solution providers, with more than 1,100 people in attendance this year.

Looking Ahead: Exciting Opportunities in 2025

The partnership between LSCU and ABCUL is set to grow even stronger with the introduction of several key initiatives in 2025. The LSCU is preparing to host both an International Regulatory Learning Journey and an International Development Learning Journey, details of which will be announced soon. Additionally, a Domestic Learning Journey will be organized, along with coordination and participation at the 2025 ABCUL Conference & Credit Union Visits Learning Journey next March. These events aim to further solidify international credit union partnerships and facilitate knowledge exchange.

Joining the Global Credit Union Community

The LSCU’s global engagement is set to continue at the 2024 World Credit Union Conference (WCUC) in Boston, Massachusetts, this week. This event, co-hosted by the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) and America’s Credit Unions, promises to be a landmark gathering for financial services professionals in the credit union space.

LSCU, alongside 32 credit unions from our tri-state footprint, will join thousands of attendees from more than 60 countries to discover the best ways to help their members succeed.

The partnership between LSCU and ABCUL is a powerful example of how credit unions can work together across borders to share knowledge, innovate, and grow. By focusing on consultation, education, and mentoring, and by celebrating the achievements of programs like CU Futures, this collaboration is paving the way for a vibrant and dynamic future for credit unions worldwide.
