Yesterday, President Barak Obama announced the nomination of John A. Herrera to the open seat on the National Credit Union Administration Board. Herrera is the senior vice president for Latino and Hispanic Affairs at Self-Help, a nonprofit community development financial institution, a position he has held since 1999.

From 2003 to 2010, Herrera served as a commissioner for the North Carolina Credit Union Commission. He was twice elected as a Town Alderman in Carrboro, NC, in 2001 and 2005.  Herrera has served on the Board of the Latino Community Development Center in Durham, NC, since 2001 and also cofounded the state-charted Latino Community Credit Union in 2000.

CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle responded to the announcement, congratulating Herrera on the nomination and saying, “Few credit union leaders have worked harder or more passionately to include marginalized and underserved communities into traditional financial services than John, who founded Latino Community CU and has headed Self-Help’s Latino and Hispanic affairs efforts for 17 years. Credit unions will benefit from having someone with direct credit union experience on the board.”
