Day 2 of the Alabama Advocacy Conference began with a continental breakfast sponsored by Smith Shellnut Wilson followed by a lively address from Sen. Greg Reed, senate majority leader, who prepared attendees for an upcoming robust election cycle. Reed reminded credit unions that he’s firmly on the side of their objectives in community service.

John McKechnie, senior partner for Total Spectrum, provided a national legislative outlook, briefing credit union professionals on priorities for the 115th Congress, including pending legislation in Washington, D.C., and potential regulatory relief opportunities. McKechnie served five years in government as a Presidential appointee at the National Credit Union Administration and shared insight on the passing consideration of Mark McWatters, current NCUA chairman, to take over the CFPB.

The conference concluded with a presentation by Brent Buchanan, president and founder of Cygnal, a veteran of more than 300 political campaigns. He spoke about grassroots efforts and the 2018 elections in  November in the state and nationally and discussed his experiences and best practices of grassroots politics.
