More and more credit unions are responding to the #CreditUnionsCareChallenge to help local businesses and organizations. The challenge, set forth by the Southeastern Credit Union Foundation (SECUF), has highlighted how credit unions have truly helped people through this trying time. The SECUF invited all LSCU-affiliated credit unions in Alabama, Florida and Georgia to take on the #CreditUnionsCareChallenge – and so far we’ve been wowed by the impact of our 42 participating credit unions!
To support their local economy, each of the participating credit unions have committed at least $25 per employee who will then use the money at a locally-owned business via online options, while adhering to social distancing protocols. The LSCU is also joining the challenge, giving $25 to each league employee to spend.
To double the impact, SECUF is committed to matching the contribution by member credit unions up to $25 per employee. These matched funds are donated to local community organizations, selected by the participating credit union.
Already, the SECUF has matched $180,030, and the total impact from the SECUF and credit unions combined is $437,030. We aren’t done yet – and you can still join!
The SECUF began this initiative to answer the challenge put forth by Tallahassee-based First Commerce Credit Union in its ambitious #LocalStrong campaign. The credit union utilized this campaign to distribute more than $4,000 among more than 150 team members to spend with local businesses.

“We are so proud of the support we have received from sponsors and from credit unions in our three states,” said SECUF Director Juli Lewis. “We know how difficult this pandemic has been on small businesses, and every bit of support they receive makes a difference to the bottom line for their companies. We want them to see how credit unions truly believe in ‘people helping people,’ and I feel strongly that we can have an impact on helping them keep their doors open as we move through this crisis.”
