July 7, 2016, The Florida Credit Union Association (FCUA), an affiliate of the League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates (LSCU), announces its endorsement of Republican Mary Thomas for Florida’s Congressional District 2 in the Aug. 30 primary election. The endorsement comes after a vote by the LSCU Board of Directors. Thomas is seeking the seat currently held by Democrat Gwen Graham who is not seeking re-election.
A longtime credit union member and proponent of these member-based financial institutions, Thomas understands the challenges facing the industry and believes credit unions are pro-business, good for working families, and good for communities. Most recently she served as the General Counsel for the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, where she managed and oversaw the legal department of an agency that administers a $900 million budget.
“Mary has a keen understanding of the difficulties facing credit unions today,” said LSCU & Affiliates President/CEO Patrick La Pine. “She realizes that credit unions play an important role in their communities and has pledged to work in Congress to better the operating environment for the industry.”
“I am very proud to have the support of the Florida Credit Union Association during the Republican Primary Election,” said Thomas. “Credit unions are pro-small business, good for working families, and good for our communities. I am a strong advocate for credit unions to remain tax-exempt because people in District 2 already are taxed enough.”
Thomas, a native of South Carolina and resident of Tallahassee for more than a decade, faces two Republican opponents in the August primary. The winner will face the Democratic challenger in the Nov. 8 general election.
