Two Florida credit unions were honored when CUNA’s National Awards Committee recently selected the recipients of the 2017 Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award, the Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award, and the Desjardins Awards for Financial Education. The awards, which are given in several credit union asset sizes, were selected among the winning entries at a league level.

Tallahasse-Leon Federal Credit Union was awarded second place for the Louise Herring Award in the less than $50 million in assets category.

Winning honorable mention for the Dora Maxwell Award were Tallahassee-Leon Federal Credit Union in the less than $50 million in assets category and First Commerce Credit Union for the $250 million to $1 billion in assets category.

These awards represent the credit union tenants of community outreach and service, exceptional member service, and commitment to financial literacy, respectively.

The Maxwell Award is presented to credit unions for outstanding social responsibility projects in their communities. Activities may include: solving core community problems, coordinating supply drives for the needy, raising money or organizing special events for charitable organizations, or mentoring students.

The Herring award is given to a credit union demonstrating the internal application of credit union philosophy to help better financial matters and increase financial education for its members. Examples include: exceptional member service, financial counseling for members experiencing difficulties, and educating members on the credit union difference.
