A longtime friend to the credit union industry, Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL), announced this week that he is undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer at the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. Hastings plans to continue representing Florida as he battles the disease.
“I have been convinced that this is a battle worth fighting, and my life is defined by fighting battles worth fighting,” Hastings announced. “Should it become clear that this cancer which has invaded my body cannot be defeated, I will tell you so.
“I release this statement, because I want to be the source providing you with this information. I ask for your prayers at this time.”
In 2014, the LSCU named Hastings as Lawmaker of the Year, recognizing his commitment to meeting in person consistently with credit union advocates and hearing their stories. LSCU President/CEO Patrick La Pine presented the award.
In the past, Hastings co-sponsored legislation for supplemental forms of capital, privacy notification reform, and member business lending.
Hastings now serves as vice chairman of the House Rules Committee, chairman-designate of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and dean and co-chairman of the Florida Delegation.
