Overall, people want to make good financial decisions that set them up for success, both today and in the future, but most never had the opportunity to learn how to do it. A case in point: two-thirds of American adults can’t pass a basic financial literacy test.

Financial literacy is such a major social issue that the U.S. government has designated the month of April as National Financial Literacy Month for more than a decade. Let us know what YOUR credit union does to celebrate National Financial Literacy Month by sending pictures and stories to submissions@lscu.coop or by posting on social media with #FinancialLiteracyMonth and @LeagueofSECUs for Twitter and @LeagueofSoutheasternCreditUnions for FB!

How will we support financial literacy?

  • Join and share the news about our monthly Cash Hash (coming up March 28 and April 25) to kick off and keep the fin-ed excitement going!
  • Watch our fb page and Twitter feed for weekly Finance Trivia throughout the month. Be the quickest (and correct) to answer, and you will win a “Cool-as-Cash” prize basket!
  • Join us for a free webinar on Tuesday, April 30 on “Resources & Reporting,” Learn about free financial education resources, ways that the Southeastern Credit Union Foundation can help your credit union increase or enhance your financial education efforts, and where and how to report all of the great work that you do in the community that involves financial education. Aside from the importance of the lawmakers hearing about all that credit unions do, your credit union can win awards! Register in advance for this webinar here.

Cash Hash is a fun and exciting way to learn about finances:

The sessions are geared toward teens and young adults, however everyone is welcome to attend, and everyone can benefit. The webinars are quick (about 20 minutes), relevant (always a current financial topic), interactive (we try to make learning about finances fun), and rewarding (the knowledge is priceless, and we give a $50 Amazon gift card away each month to one of the participants).

The dates, topics. and links can be found here on the Foundation page.

If you have questions about getting involved in National Financial Literacy Month, please contact SECUF Director Juli Lewis at juli.lewis@lscu.coop.
