Credit unions have recently been given high-profile cover stories in the Tampa Bay Business Journal and the Birmingham Business Journal. Each story looked at how credit unions are serving their members, the struggles in the marketplace, and how creative they are with their products and services.

The Tampa Bay Business Journal featured credit unions in its inaugural Disruption Day on Oct. 1. The reporter looked at the new ways that credit unions are reaching members, particularly millennials, as well as the new modern branches credit unions offer. San Antonio Citizens FCU discussed why it bought Calusa Bank. The story included a great quote from Chris Nichols, chief strategy officer for CenterState Bank. He said credit unions are always faster and better than banks at reaching their members.

“The embarrassing reality is that credit unions tend to be more forward thinking than banks when it comes to both customer engagement and technology,” Nichols told the TBBJ.

The Birmingham Business Journal looked at how credit unions are growing and went more in-depth on some of the issues including increasing the member business lending cap and the ability to accept public deposits. The story got even further reach as the Birmingham Business Journal Editor Cindy Fisher Crawford was a guest on the local NPR station and she talked more about the story and how credit unions are reaching their members by meeting their needs.

The League worked with the reporters on both stories to ensure that a number of credit unions were featured in each story.
