LSCU Wraps Up Successful CUNA GAC

Last week, more than 300 advocates from Alabama, Florida, and Georgia travelled to Washington, D.C. to advance the credit union movement. This year marked a record-breaking Credit Union National Association Governmental Affairs Conference (CUNA GAC) with more than 6,000 people in attendance. Advocates met with key regulatory leaders as well as congressional members representing our tri-state footprint.

The Southeast was well-represented with credit union executives and League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates (LSCU & Affiliates) staff participating in numerous panels throughout the week. In addition, Alabama’s newest United States Senator, Katie Britt, took the mainstage to express her sincere appreciation for the work and support of credit unions.

The only League in the nation to meet with the President’s Administration this GAC, LSCU hosted a meeting with the Department of Treasury to convey the importance of critical overdraft services and programs to consumers across America. The group met with Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions Graham Steele to share the work of credit unions to best serve members and communities.

Thanks to the work of credit union leaders who made time to represent our industry, credit union priorities were echoed throughout the halls of Congress and among our regulatory agencies.

Legislative priorities included protecting overdraft services, opposing credit card interchange mandates, supporting the Credit Union Board Modernization Act, establishing national data security standards, creating a five-member bipartisan CFPB Board, and supporting the Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund. Regulatory priorities included expanding field of membership, educating succession planning, supporting small credit unions and Minority Depository Institutions, improving the CDFI Fund process, regulating cryptocurrency, and protecting overdraft and non-sufficient funds services.
